ThawDay

When to buy a turkey for Thanksgiving

Frozen: buy by Sunday, November 15, 2026. Fresh: buy 1 to 2 days before cooking, so Tuesday, November 24 or Wednesday, November 25. Dinner is Thursday, November 26, 2026.

Frozen birds: the buy date is about the store

The calculator stamps the frozen buy date eleven days before dinner: Buy by this date (kitchen practice). Frozen birds sell out the weekend before Thanksgiving. That is kitchen practice, and this page labels it that way. The hard dates in a turkey plan come from the thaw, not the store.

Then the thaw starts, by weight

A frozen bird bought by November 15 waits in your freezer until its fridge day:

WeightMove to the fridge
12 lbMonday, November 23
16 lbSunday, November 22
20 lbSaturday, November 21
24 lbFriday, November 20

Full dates for every weight are on when to take the turkey out of the freezer. Not sure what weight to buy? Start with how much turkey per person: one pound each.

Fresh birds: the short window

Fresh: buy 1 to 2 days before cooking. There is no thaw to plan, and no freezer stay to hide in: a fresh bird goes from the store to your fridge, at 40 F or below, and into the oven on Thursday. Buy late on purpose, not early by accident.

Late either way? A frozen bird can still thaw in cold water: Seal the bird in a leak-proof plastic bag. Submerge it in cold tap water. Change the water every 30 minutes. Cook it right after it thaws. A fresh bird skips the thaw entirely.

USDA's third safe way is the microwave: follow your oven manual for size and timing, and cook the turkey right after it thaws. Never thaw a turkey on the counter. The outside warms up hours before the inside thaws. Bacteria grow in that warm layer.

Your exact dates, in seconds

Tell the calculator your weight and dinner time. It stamps the thaw, the oven time, and the rest. Or ask in your own words: "16 lb turkey, dinner Thursday at 5."
