How much turkey per person?

One pound of whole turkey per person. For leftovers, plan one and a half pounds per person. Bone and skin make up much of the weight, so the bird on the table is bigger than the meat on the plates.

Bird sizes by head count

The calculator's sizing rule, word for word: Plan one pound of whole turkey per person. For leftovers, add half a pound per person. Bone and skin make up much of the weight. Sizes run 8 to 24 lb, the range in the USDA charts.

10 people10 lb15 lb
12 people12 lb18 lb
16 people16 lb24 lb
20 people20 lbTwo birds, 15 lb each

Twenty people with leftovers need 30 lb of turkey. No single chart bird holds that, so the calculator names the split instead: two birds, 15 pounds each, cook faster.

Small crowds, and what happens next

Fewer than 8 people? The rule does not change: one pound each, one and a half for leftovers. ThawDay plans birds from 8 to 24 lb, so the calculator starts your plan at an 8 lb bird and the extra becomes built-in leftovers.

Once you know the size, the dates matter more than the size did. A 16 lb bird moves to the fridge on Sunday, November 22 for Thanksgiving 2026. The full date table is on when to take the turkey out of the freezer, and when to buy it comes first. Short on time? Cold water thaws at 30 minutes per pound: Seal the bird in a leak-proof plastic bag. Submerge it in cold tap water. Change the water every 30 minutes. Cook it right after it thaws.

USDA's third safe way is the microwave: follow your oven manual for size and timing, and cook the turkey right after it thaws. Never thaw a turkey on the counter. The outside warms up hours before the inside thaws. Bacteria grow in that warm layer.

Your exact dates, in seconds

Tell the calculator your weight and dinner time. It stamps the thaw, the oven time, and the rest. Or ask in your own words: "16 lb turkey, dinner Thursday at 5."
